It is important for the SMT to recognise the need for change. Within many schools and organisations there might be a few lone voices talking about the reducing costs, lower consumption, whilst everyone agrees that “something has to be done” there is often the attitude that someone else will do it or ‘it’s not my responsibility’.
“Not my job Guv!” and “I’m much too busy” come out all the time. Really?
How much time does it really take to power down your computer at the end of the day, turn off the heating or switch off the lights if you are the last one out?
An important part of the Using Less Stuff programme is to help ensure that everyone in the school takes responsibility for these simple steps.
Key to this, is making sure that projects are given the time and resources required through the support of senior management. The support by Senior Management is critical and will motivate others to get on board with the whole concept.
A committed and engaged senior management team is not just essential for the daily running of a business, the formulation of achievable goals and a good strategy, but it is also necessary for high engagement, commitment and trust. The foundations of a successful company start at the top.
An international study found that when employees have confidence in senior management and the board, they are nine times more likely to be engaged and committed.
The Negatives – what can happen without support from the Senior Management team?
Watch this short video to see what can happen without backing from the Senior Management Team…
The Positives – how to engage your senior management team
Do you need help trying to engage your SMT, this video might help!
Senior Management Team will have two main objectives during this programme
1. To ensure costs/ consumption are reduced.
2. To ensure all pupils and staff are happy.
These 2 main objectives overlap considerably. If the school is reducing costs it will begin to make profits and everyone will reap the rewards, creating a positive atmosphere. Likewise your staff and pupils will be happy because they can see that their focus on using less stuff is having an impact, they are likely to try even harder. The SMT can also help make this programme a success by:
1. Adding authority to the programme
2. Answering difficult questions
3. Encouraging pupils and staff to be involved
4. Publicly displaying results
5. Finding quick wins
