Introduction

The Principles of Using Less

This module sets your starting point on the journey to changing behaviours in and around the school/business.

The principle of Using Less is about educating for social responsibility.  We want everyone to make conscious decisions about how we use our resources – not so much about whether we recycle (although that is good) but to question if we really need to use the stuff in the first place?

Making sure the projects and goals are set up correctly with the right people is vital to behaviour change success and to the long term goal of continuous improvements to both consumption reduction and better processes.

The aim of ULS is to change the culture across the whole school from the early years to 18 from “Using Lots” to “Using Less”.  It has to include all Governors, Teachers, Pupils, and support teams.

The long term aim is for the whole school community to understand the concept of “Social Responsibility” and reduce the usage of resources and therefore the cost of running and managing the school as a whole.

The Pathway

The process flow diagram below highlights the stages of the ULS Programme.  We have matched the modules in this programme to match the 6 stages of the process:

1. Getting Started

2.Analysis, Monitoring & Recording

3. Changing Minds & Behaviours

4.Setting Goals

5. Taking Action – Projects

6.Measure Success

We then have a final section – The circle of ULS which looks at how you maintain and grow existing projects to support continuous improvements.
